SMTP
Mail Sending Policy
Like many other
companies attempting to cut down on Spam, Internet Connection
has restricted access to it's mail sending (SMTP) services.
We don't restrict SMTP access as far as how many messages
you send, the size of the messages or even how many
recipients you specify. Instead, we simply require that
access to our SMTP service be from accounts on our systems.
Usually customers
don't even notice the measures we've taken to protect
our SMTP servers from illegimate use but occasionally
you might receive an error message upon sending email.
If you try to
send an email and receive the following error message,
you were not authorized to use our SMTP services.
"sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed
rcpthosts (#5.7.1)"
In order to get
around this you have do one of three things:
1. Configure
your email client for SMTP authentication.
2. Check your email account before attempting to send
mail.
3. Use your dial-up ISP's SMTP server.
Configuring
an Email Client for SMTP Authentication:
Many email clients
have a provision for specifying that your account requires
SMTP authientication. To do this in Outlook Express
for Windows, for example, you go to the "Tools"
menu and select "Accounts". Then you choose
your mail account and click the "Properties"
button. On the "Servers" tab, near the bottom
of the window, there's a section labeled "Outgoing
Mail Server". In that section there's a checkbox
for "My server requires authentication" and
a button maked "Settings...". To enable SMTP
authentication simply check the box. Next, hit the "Settings..."
button and make sure "Use same setting as my incoming
mail server" is chosen.
Checking Mail Before Sending
By sending your
login and password to the server (by checking your mail
account) you open up a 30 minute window in which you
can send email.
Using Another SMTP Service
Most dial-up providers
(including ISDN, DSL and Cable access providers) provide
SMTP servers that you can use.
